Sussurro
Sussurro Mozambique is an eco-conscious boutique hotel driven by design, nestled along the tranquil shores of a secluded saltwater lagoon in southern Mozambique. Comprising a series of bungalows, it fosters a sense of mindfulness through meticulously crafted details such as hand-stitched bathrobes, organic soaps and cherished antique furnishings.
Rooms
Reflecting the sultry climate, the six spacious bungalows of Sussurro Mozambique are intentionally minimalist, free from clutter, with each detail meticulously chosen to foster a serene, mindful atmosphere—while also celebrating craftsmanship and handmade elements in daily living. Picture hand-stitched cotton bathrobes, luxurious linen bedding, and eco-conscious, biodegradable soaps and shampoos stored in artisanal pottery bottles. Woven mats underfoot and intricately designed makuti palm leaf ceilings add artistic flair. Owners have personally sourced heritage antique pieces from beloved African locales like Zimbabwe. The most frequented area undoubtedly becomes the shaded veranda, closely followed by the outdoor tub, perfect for indulging in late-night, starlit soaks.
Dining
The laid-back, open-plan kitchen blurs the lines between Sussurro's chefs and guests, fostering collaboration and conversation as fresh produce is showcased from the on-site garden or sourced from local organic markets. From garden-fresh salads to homemade brinjal ravioli with rocket and cashew pesto, or curried mangrove crab atop pilau rice, every seasonal menu item prioritizes support for local fishermen and traders. Drinks follow suit, offering a true taste of the region with options like ice-cold coconut water, cocktails featuring tropical fruits, fair-trade coffee from Mount Gorongosa, and teas infused with fresh herbs.
Region
Spanning a 1,600-mile coastline, Mozambique boasts the Indian Ocean's hidden gem for beach vacations, with its tranquil coastal havens spared from the overtourism that plagues other destinations. Emerging from a civil war in the late 1990s, the region has preserved its authenticity. Prior to the establishment of Sussurro on the remote Nhamabue peninsula, stylish accommodations were primarily found on Benguerra Island in the Bazaruto archipelago. Despite its mainland location, Sussurro is part of the 550-square-mile Bazaruto marine protected area, a vital migratory route for marine life including dugongs, whales, whale sharks, as well as a sanctuary for manta rays, turtles, and a vibrant array of fish.
